Bio: Rachel Nixon
Rachel Nixon is an award-winning journalist and online veteran, Rachel Nixon is Director of Digital Media for CBC News. She heads the strategic direction and development of CBC News across digital platforms, including the leading news website, CBCNews.ca.
“The need for professional journalists is greater than ever, but their role has irreversibly changed,” says Rachel. “No longer gatekeepers, journalists have an opportunity to create meaning and understanding from the wealth of information that citizens share about the world around them.”
Until May 2009, Rachel was Global News Director for Vancouver-based NowPublic.com, running the editorial operations of the world’s largest participatory news network.
Before moving to Canada, Rachel spent nine years with the internationally acclaimed BBCNews.com, where most recently she served as Deputy World Editor. While at the BBC, Rachel led coverage of global stories, such as the US elections, on multiple and emerging media platforms.

Bio: Richard Mcilveen
Richard McIlveen is the Producer of the CTV News late local news in Toronto. As such he is ‘grounded’ in traditional media, giving the GTA its nightly summary of local news events.
Richard has also been producing and writing a TV News weekend segment that has kept a watchful eye on the ever evolving world of the internet since 1996. ‘Webmania’ launched at a time when about 5 per cent of Canadians homes were beginning to ‘dial in’ but it was clear that digital communication via the ‘net’ was about to reshape the world.
Over the past 13 years, Richard has interviewed and written about literally hundreds of the bright minds that have shaped the evolution of the Net. Richard also got hands-on experience early in the digital revolution, launching and running the CTV News Toronto (CFTO News) website from 1995 through 2001.
Looking forward, Richard offers a unique perspective on how traditional media is adapting to the challenges of an evolving digital media and based on his observation of trends, where the future is taking us.

Tim Shore is the founder of blogTO, Toronto’s most widely read news and culture blog and the largest site of its kind in Canada.
Before founding the site in 2004 Tim worked for a number of advertising agencies and Web design firms overseeing ad campaigns and digital initiatives for well known brands such as Yahoo! and Microsoft.
He started his web and media career as a latte-fetching intern at CNN in New York.
